Parents and Teacher Guide to Student Writing Success by Paul Barger
This is a completely free resource created by Paul, most useful for New Teachers who are struggling to get their students to write. The Guide goes into great detail about why students struggle with writing, and how you can scaffold their work to help them produce reports, essays, poetry, fictional text, and more. Paul also offers a 'Quick and Easy Essay Writing' publication (pictured), which can also be accessed from his website.

Teaching Literacy
Teaching literacy can be daunting! Especially as a new teacher, who probably has a very 'theoretical' understanding of teaching literacy, but very few practical 'how to' strategies. You are not alone - there are many top quality resources online that will support you through this phase of your development.
There are many different strategies for teaching literacy, and the way you do it will largely depend on your curriculum and the age of the students you are teaching. Some hints we would give you to apply to all grade levels of the primary school include:
- One of the best websites around for downloading literacy games is Robot Reader. It has dozens of excellent downloadable literacy games for all sections of the Primary and Elementary school.
- Start early! It’s never too young to start developing a love of language in children. If you work with very young children or toddlers, there are lots of early reading strategies you can teach to children to put them in good stead for the remainder of their schooling.

-
Tap student’s interest as much as possible. Let them read, write and speak about things that are interesting to them, and you will have greater motivation and therefore a greater effort and finished product!
-
Play literacy games as much as you can to reinforce spelling, sight words and other literacy concepts.
-
Laminate all your language resources so you can use them multiple times through the year, over multiple years.
- The group work classroom layout in the New Teachers Kit can really help you keep on top of the writing development of each student in your class. When you know how to manage your whole group while attending to individual needs, you'll most definitely feel more confident that you are teaching literacy right!
